The roots of Belgian band Cyclone, one of the most popular representatives of European thrash metal, go back to 1981. That year, the band was originally formed in Aalst under the name Centurion. As their music became increasingly heavier, they decided to change their name to Cyclone. After a series of demos, they finally signed with Roadrunner Records, where their now legendary debut album, “Brutal Destruction,” was released in 1986. “Inferior To None” followed in 1990 on Justice Records, before the band disbanded three years later.
In 2018, Cyclone rose from the ashes and have since been extremely active on the live circuit (with their own shows as well as appearances at prestigious festivals such as Headbangers Open Air).
High Roller Records is now proud to announce Cyclone’s comeback mini-album, “Known Unto God,” featuring five brand-new compositions. The band’s current lineup consists of: Maxime Deschamps (lead guitar), Jesse Van Den Bossche (rhythm guitar), Vincent Heyman (bass), Gabriel Deschamps (drums), and Guido Gevels (vocals).
“I’ve been carrying the idea for the album title around with me for a while now,” explains singer and founding member Guido Gevels. “On the war graves of unknown soldiers in the Flanders Fields cemetery, you often see the inscription: ‘Known unto God.’ I thought: Someday I’ll write a song about that. And I finally did. The album was recorded in December 2024. And there will definitely be more new releases from us.”
Gevels sees the new album, “Known Unto God,” as the perfect combination of “Brutal Destruction” and “Inferior To None”: “However, we were very careful not to copy ourselves. There was no recycling. We opted for shorter songs than most of those on ‘Inferior To None.’ Superfluous riffs were cut. We wanted to capture our old-school sound, but with a new touch, without losing any of its catchiness. My favorite song on the record is called ‘Nothing Is Real.’ It highlights a somewhat more unusual side of Cyclone. Here, the inspiration from the NWOBHM and early 1980s US metal is clearly evident. NWOBHM bands like Satan, Holocaust, Angel Witch, Sweet Savage, Diamond Head, and Venom have always been a major influence on our style of playing.”
