Being not the most ardent fan of Glam rock/metal, I don’t usually find something positive to say about this genre’s releases. But when I do enjoy a glam rock/metal release and I keep on listening to it, then I know without a doubt that this is a record worth mentioning and suggesting.
Cyanide 4’s newest release, entitled “Amalgama”, is such a release. The band’s most recent album was my introduction to their sound and having never listened to them before and knowing only that they were leaning towards the Glam genres, I didn’t have much hope. I was so wrong. It only took 4 minutes- that’s how much the opening song lasts- to change my mind.
Cyanide 4 begin powerfully with one of the best songs of the album. The “The Secret Doctrine” is an exciting mixture of Glam rock with heavier, heavy metal inspired ideas that sets the pace and the mood for the album. Not only the Cyanide 4 begin in such a fiery tone but they manage to keep this speed and energy throughout the album, until the very last minute. The band shapes and produces a straightforward Glam/Hard rock sound that is enriched with rock ‘n’ roll ideas, while at some points they tend to be a bit heavier, leaning towards the heavy metal. In the album there are, also, some ‘80s sounding references that feel appropriate and add a bit of nostalgia to the compositions.
As a point of reference, I would say that the sound of “Amalgama” is the offspring of bands like the WASP and Stryper, but that does not defines the album properly. The Cyanide 4 have shaped and created their own sound, a sound with distinct identity and character that neither copies nor imitates other bands, but rather offers a new, fresh and exciting approach in a genre that desperately needs it.
