Wow, 2019 marks 20 years since Buckcherry’s debut album came out. Lasting that long in the 21st Century rock n roll game is no easy task. Longevity in the rock game means delivering solid albums and concerts and Buckcherry are proof of that. A very hard-working band that consistently puts out albums filled with music they know their fans will enjoy, while never straying too far from center, but not staying complacent or re treading riffs. Ultimately a fun band, a hard working band – and their new album WARPAINT is a nice addition to their already lofty catalog.
The album opens up with the title track, WARPAINT which sets the tone. A solid mid temp rock song, big open beat with crunchy chords and great vocal melody. This is what Buckcherry does best! I have to admit when they first started hyping the album, they released a video of a cover tune they did for the album. “Head Like A Hole” by Nine Inch Nails……..and band and a song I was never a fan of. While it’s a decent cover tune, I just never got into this tune but this version is MUCH more listenable than the original for me. Buckcherry makes it sound like much more of a rock song, and there’s nice vocals and guitar soloing in it to make it better …….. and the video is pretty cool ——-
As on que with Buckcherry, the album also has 2 ballad type of tunes – RADIO SONG and THE HUNGER. If you enjoy songs like SORRY from Buckcherry’s earlier albums, you will no doubt love these 2 tunes. RADIO SONG for me is better, a very well written ballad with some very tasty guitar work —–
The album is also full of nice rocker songs too, of course!!!! THE VACUUM, BACK DOWN, NO REGRETS amongst others really have nice punch to them. The song THE DEVIL IN DETAILS has this guitar intro, totally reminded me of ACE FREHLEY’s opening riff to SPEEDIN’ BACK TO MY BABY from his 1978 solo album, very cool stuff!!!! A song that really sums up the Buckcherry rock n roll sound on this album is BENT – 3 and half minutes of what you want from them!!!
So 20 years later Buckcherry are still rolling, a lot of line up changes since the beginning but it doesn’t seem to slow them down at all! This album has all the elements this band has brought to the table since 1999, and I hope they never change. I’ve been onboard since day one with this band, seen them live, briefly met them, shook hands. Cool guys, and a solid kick ass rock band! WARPAINT rocks and keeps the Buckcherry rock n roll machine driving on into the future!!!!!
