Greece is well known mostly for its black metal heritage and bands like Rotting Christ, Varathron and Necromantia. There are also death metal bands from Greece worth to check out like for example Septicflesh (formerly known as Septic Flesh), Horrified and Death Courier. However, apart from the well known bands, in Greece there has always been going on a great underground metal movement.
Black Sun Omega is a part of the new Greek underground. Formed only in 2018, they released their debut “The Sum of All Fears” where they unleash a violent thrash attack towards non-believers of thrash might. Death metal flakes are thrown in for extra flavor. The band doesn’t forget of course to remain up to date and they have some groove metal additions as well. They also never forget their heavy metal origins. However, the basic part of their music is a mid period Sepultura based thrash. Throughout the album you will listen to Nuclear Assault, D.R.I., Whiplash and Sacred Reich influences to name a few.
Black Sun Omega deliver really tasty thrash songs like “Fightback”, “Flowing Hate”, “Ground of God” or “Start Your War”. Their tunes are aggressive and feature punchy riffs, aggressive vocals, a thick bass and nice drumming. Everything is well balanced in the production and for what appears to be a DIY job it’s absolutely fine.
“The Whore of Babylon” is a slightly different track for their style. I think it gets closer to heavy metal standards, with a Slayer-ish attitude. It’s a very memorable track that will remain in your memory (and your player) for a long time.
The cover artwork looks a bit grindcore and prophetic with the antivirus masked human.
To sum up, the Black Sun Omega debut “The Sum of All Fears” is a very nice thrash album. Please don’t expect another nostalgic thrash band here. Black Sun Omega just do their own thing in extreme music. They have a wide spectrum of influences and styles like heavy, death, groove metal and they do it their own way.
The band manages to bring to the audience their message. And that is they want to play extreme music that will kick your ass and get you in the pit.
They independently released their CD and we wish them the best of luck. Save their name because I am pretty sure you will hear again from them soon.
