To shape a haunting and heavy atmosphere described by elegance and dark philosophical exploration concerning the human life, the Black Reuss blends the gothic and the post-punk aesthetic and sound with the heavy metal, while he also draws inspiration by the doom metal in order to make the “Journey” sound even more massive and heavy. The gothic approach, being the foundation that it is for this release, is expanded with industrial elements, electronic music and for an exotic tone some eastern, oriental-like melodic lines that add a bit of brightness to the dark texture of the album. Also, the keyboards and synths play a key role in the sound shaping of the “Journey” with their melodic soundscapes that affect and alter the atmosphere in each song, along with the prominent bass lines that seem to be inspired mainly by post-punk rhythmic patterns.
Each song of the album describes and refers to a different part of his journey. Through the course of the “Journey”, Black Reuss comes face to faces with the hardships and obstacles that are opposed to him during his journey. In order to overcome and move further, he needs to set himself free from the material things, to loosen the grip that controls his life and take decisions for himself. By courage, dedication and through struggles and pain, he must finish the “Journey”, in order to begin the third chapter of his life, the “Arrival”.
Due to the fact that the “Journey” is the second chapter and has immediate thematic connection to its previous one, I will offer a short premise of the “Metamorphosis”. In his first chapter, the Black Reuss explores the person that is torn and resides between worlds, without a real home, struggling to find their selves and to find their place in the world. Only when the realization of belonging comes, the person can begin the second chapter, the “Journey”.
With the second chapter now unveiled, Black Reuss calls the fans to walk along side with him during his journey. The Black Reuss’ second work is a unique and thought provoking musical experience that must not be missed by anyone. The “Journey” is a philosophical approach to life dressed with music and it is highly recommended.
