Black Reuss – “Metamorphosis”
Black Reuss’ debut, entitled “Metamorphosis”, is the first chapter of this project that will be consisted of a total of 4 different chapter/albums.
The beginning of this project and this debut finds the artist searching for his self, searching to find who he really is. At this point Black Reuss feels lost between different worlds, there is no feeling of belonging and he barely knows who he really is. This first work is inspired by the effort to overcome those struggles and narrates way a person lost can transform into a person sentient of themselves and their purpose.
Developed upon a doom metal basis and heavily inspired by the gothic rock/metal sound, the “Metamorphosis” proposes and presents a refreshing sound, dark but not abysmal. The heavy, slow, ominous doom metal riffs are combined with the gothic element in the vocal and melodic lines, resulting in a musical product described by heaviness, melody and a dark elegance. This musical core of the “Metamorphosis” is enriched further with post-rock and synthwave ideas that add to the melodic part, dark electronic influences and even some oriental melodic lines that completely break the established pattern and create a beautiful contrast. Also, the doom metal aspect is influenced by kindred genres such as sludge and stoner at certain points, which a sense of groove to some of the riffs.
There is no doubt that the “Metamorphosis” is a special and very interesting record. Not only because of its philosophical and well-constructed concept, but, also, due to the fact that the sound is complex and multilayered without never being tiresome. This melodic mix of doom metal and gothic rock/metal offers a unique listening experience that I highly recommend and you should not miss.
Interview:
Welcome Black Reuss and Maurizio to Kick of Ass
Introduce to us who is Black Reuss.
After a few years of experience in different bands and in the music industry, I decided to do my own thing in 2017 and founded Black Reuss. Black Reuss has the setup of a band but is a solo project. I write and produce my own music and play all instruments except the drums. Currently I live in the Principality of Liechtenstein, but back in 2017 I lived in a village which is on the river Reuss. That’s where the name comes from. Thematically, it is about the flow of life which I describe in four chapters. Metamorphosis, Journey, Arrival and Death. Each chapter is packed in an album. The first two are already published and currently I’m working on the third album Arrival.
What caused you to understand that music was your way?
As a teenager I discovered music and I would say that the first thing I consciously noticed and became involved with was the music and career of Elvis Presley. I also realized that with music you can reach everyone in the world. It is a universal language with which you can reach everyone not only with words but also with emotions. That fascinated me at the time and I wanted to be able to do the same. That’s why I started to play the guitar. For me it was and is also a vehicle to process my feelings and moods. Making music is like an island for me, where I can live my life to the fullest and no one tells me what to do.
What’s the biggest problem you’ve had to overcome so far as a musician?
I believe purely as a musician there are almost no problems except maybe that there can be creative barriers from time to time. But as soon as business comes into play, the problems start. In hindsight, after a few years of experience as a musician and in the industry, I would say that the biggest problem is that business can divide people. You always have to watch out for that. The business must not become central but the music must remain so. Of course, the business is part of it, but the driver to make music and make decisions must not be the business but the music.
How do you describe your music to people?
I do not describe my music. I leave that to those who listen to it. I just do what I feel and have stylistically no guidelines.
Your latest album called “Metamorphosis” was released last September, tell us few words for the album.
Metamorphosis is the first chapter in the flow of life that I am trying to describe. It is the first step, the transformation. But after the transformation you have not arrived. It is only the step in which you realize that it can no longer go on like this, and in which you develop the strength to go on the journey.
Metamporphosis is the first Black Reuss album and as it is, I would do a lot of things differently today. I have learned a lot from this album, which I do differently today. Nevertheless, I think it is well done.
What does the album’s title reveal?
As already said, it is the first chapter in the flow of life, which I try to describe in this project on four albums. It is the first step, the transformation. The title is I think very self-descriptive.
“All is one, all seems to be in balance, all is one, the journey can begin now” tell us more for this
This is the moment when you realize and know that you have the power to really tackle the things you want to change. I mean, just knowing that something needs to be changed is often not enough. It takes a lot of energy to change things. Only when you have a certain balance, you can do it. There are always at least two sides to a problem and it is important that you can evaluate both sides objectively and then consciously decide which one is right for you. This does not mean that it has to be right for the people around you. And this openness, also needs strength. Simply going in one direction without considering the next is easy. To eliminate everything that does not fit without forming the context is destructive. To take your environment along in your actions is then something else and that needs strength and balance.
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
From life and everything it brings with it.
How would you define the word “success”?
For me personally, success is when you feel satisfaction and happiness in what you do. If you can also touch other people emotionally, then it is the crowning glory. Others would probably say here that a high bank balance makes you happy. I don’t believe that alone means that you are successful.
Are you writing new music now for a new album?
Yes, I’m constantly writing songs and I’ve just finished the third album and I’m already writing the fourth.
If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?
There are some artists for whom I would like to open a show. To name a few… Black Sabbath, Type O Negative, Pearl Jam, Opeth…
Is there something you like to add as we close?
Yes, maybe the hint that it is good to believe in yourself and follow your dreams. My dream is to become one with the world, I am working on it with persistence. Without thinking if it is possible or not… that’s why it is a dream.
Thank you so much dear Maurizio all the best for your next steps
Thanks to you, for your interest in what I am doing…
