Bend for Eleven were formed in Thessaloniki, Greece in 2014. Their first album entitled “Aggressive Illusions” was released 2 years later in 2016. They have just released their 2nd full length album “Rebel Day”. The band’s style is alternative/heavy rock with catchy guitar driven melodies.
The opening song of the album “Yeah Yeah Yeah” is a song that summarizes right from the beginning what Bend for Eleven are about. It has the air of a single and heavily reminds us of the 90’s grunge years.
“Rebel Day” begins in a garage style. The next riff reveals a “BadMotorFinger” Soundgarden influenced song. There is also an old R.E.M. drive in the guitars. Still the song is significantly heavier. Nice background vocals used give a 90’s result that kinda revived in the early 10’s. The song is memorable and sing-along.
“All of My Memories” features some quality guitar themes. Again R.E.M. and especially their 80’s to early 90’s works are somehow present. I found some Last Drive ideas thrown in as well. Bend for Eleven’s songwriting makes you feel comfortable with it.
“Inner Sight” has a very heavy, I’d dare say doomy, riff plus nice melodic guitar phrases to underline it. The old Australian punk rock band Celibate Rifles came to mind while listening to the intro. It’s cool punk rock is present in today’s music. The psychedelic late Mudhoney riff is super nice in its Stooges excellency! The song ends with a heavier theme.
“Move On” has a great alternative rock riff. The vocals are expressive balancing between being emotional and angry.
“Freeman” has a hypnotic mid song part, but other than that it is a heavy alternative rock song in the band’s style.
“Take Me Over” has a faster pace. The slightly distorted vocals are a nice addition. The song builds up on a crescendo of riffs and guitar phrases. Salvation comes at the end.
Next song “Evelyn” has that pop melodic vocal lines you meet in Monster Magnet. The heavy rock style of the song with the alternative touches will surely turn it to a club favorite.
Last song is “Long Waitin’ Years”. The song begins with a heavy Sabbath/Zeppelin riff. It then gets more modern and alternative in a Monster Magnet way. Note the beautiful guitar work here.
To sum up, in their second album Bend for Eleven released a noteworthy work. “Rebel Day” is an album that fans of alternative and heavy rock will dig. It has many songs that could be played in every rock club. Take a listen!
