Battle Symphony – “War on Earth”
Battle Symphony have announced the release of their debut album, “War on Earth”, a Metal Opera created by the Greek journalist, keyboardist and author Nikos Tzouannis. The record consists of 11 plus 1 songs, entitled “Fire on Earth”, “Hail Mankind, Hail!”, “Soul Survivors”, “Genocide”, “Power and Glory”, “The Final Chance”, “One-Eyed Jack”, “Sacrifice”, “Darling” which is a cover of Stories’ song, “One Day”, “The Battle Symphony” and “Los Guerreros”.
The concept of the album is a sci-fi story that takes place in a dystopian earth conquered by aliens. There, a rebel human army raises war against the aliens and the humans who sided with them, to free the earth and reclaim their home. A pretty straightforward story of good versus evil that makes a great concept for a power metal record.
If the story hasn’t intrigued you, I bet that the introductions will. The project features some well-known musicians of the power metal scene, like Roberto Tiranti (Labyrinth), Nicholas Leptos (Arrayan Path, ex-Warlod), Tasos Lazaris (Fortress Under Siege), Gus Drax (Sunburst, Suicidal Angels and Black Fate), Julian Kuster (Black Eden) and Katie Johnson, just to name a few.
So, if you are familiar with those artists you can already guess how the “War on Earth” will be sounding. If not, let me give you an idea.
Musically, the “War on Earth” is pure and straightforward power/heavy metal but for a couple of surprises. Inspired by the European power metal scene of epic riffs, melodic leads, shredding solos and wide, powerful choruses, the Battle Symphony build an album based on those principles. There are, also, classical music and folk influences that enrich the compositions and add drive and dynamic in the musical narrative.
As for the surprises, these are the tracks “One-Eyed Jack” and the final song of the album, “The Battle Symphony”. While the record has a certain aesthetic, these songs break the pattern and add that refreshing element of surprise.
Beginning with the one mentioned last, the “The Battle Symphony” introduces an instrument that I am guessing is a sitar, adding some oriental melodic lines that elevate the whole composition.
The “One-Eyed Jack”, now, is a whole different story since it is, in my opinion, the most unique song of the record. With the a southern gothic, delta blues intro, the song moves on to a standard power metal main section before it introduces the 70s, blues organ lines that crash out of nowhere and add a rock ‘n’ roll excitement to the track.
For the curious, the band has released already a single called “Fire on Earth” if you want to get a first taste. The album will be unleashed on May 15th and I highly recommend that you give it a listen since I am confident that the “War on Earth” will be one of the best power metal albums of 2022.
