Barbara Black from Spain release their 3rd full length album “Love, Death & Flies”. The band plays great hard rock/metal music, but what makes them different is the vocal abilities and the attitude of their female singer.
The roots of the band’s music can be traced in the 70’s rock and hard rock with bands like Led Zeppelin. Barbara Black drive these influences through a street rock/glam and heavy metal 80’s way to reach up to modern/groove metal. Despite the music labels, what’s for sure is that Barbara Black were definitely born to rock the hell out!
They have an almost theatrical approach in their style. Their lyrics circle around horror cinema, dark romanticism and decadence.
The vocals of Barbara Black are of big range and huge quality. At their most extreme moments, like for example in the opening track “Damnified”, they sound too extreme and convincing in a way we can hear in bands like Arch Enemy. In other parts of their songs, they seem to be influenced by bands like Pantera (for example listen to the opening theme of “Kissed By Flames”). The clear and operatic vocals of Barbara Black are both very beautiful and useful in the songwriting.
As a hard rock band, Barbara Black’s music is based on sharp guitar riffs. But their influences come from gospel and southern rock to opera and metal.
The songwriting, although not mainstream, it is still very catchy and memorable. The songs are tight, well performed and their structure is meaningful.
Standout tracks would be “Don’t Play with Fire”, with its very interesting melodic lines. Of course, the single “Tiger Tamer”, a summary of the bands abilities. And also the last songs of the album “Vampire Love – Chapter I – You Belong to Me” and “Vampire Love – Chapter II – Queen of Flies” which make a really nice concept that works good with the band’s style.
“Love, Death & Flies” is a very interesting hard rock/metal album with a charismatic female vocalist who moves with her voice from opera to extreme metal with ease. The vocals may be the trademark of Barbara Black, but the whole band performs very well, they have a very good songwriting and a modern production to support it. Enjoyable!
