1) Hello Barbara! A great honor to host you. You are one of the most important metal women from Spain. How are you?
My pleasure! I am so honored to be here, thank you!
2) First of all, how do you feel about the label “female fronted metal”.
I firmly believe that in music there should be no gender labels. When a pianist plays, it is not important whether he is a man or a woman, I think the voice is just another same instrument.
3) You released “Love, Death & Flies” via Spanish label Rock Estatal a few months ago. Are you happy about the feedback?
The album was released last March 10th and we are receiving very good reviews from both, press and fans, we are very proud of. Fans from Mexico, Argentina, Ecuador, Uruguay, Spain, New York, Italy and even Asia are asking for our album and transmitting their enjoyment for it, that´s amazing and rewarding.
4) Who is the main composer and lyricist of the band? Is there any special way to compose or arrange music?
In musical terms we all compose. Javier, Carlos and I usually make a sketch of a song and share the ideas, after this the whole band finish the song in the rehearse room. About lyrics everything comes out of my crazy head hahhaha but “Damnified” which is a half-written by bassist Marquez.
5) What do you predict about the band in several years from now? Will you remain faithful to your vision or trying any changes?
Predicting is difficult hahaha, we will be working hard in our songs as always, rehearsing for live shows and thinking in next album. What I would like is that in the next years our dreams come true, as playing in other countries and big festivals such as Wacken Open Air, Resurrection Festival, Hell Fest and many more!
6) What was your best live performance that you can recall?
I don’t know if it’s the best performance, but for sure it was magical. The day I sang in the Freddie Mercury tribute in La Riviera venue in Madrid, there was a special energy that came with me on stage, and it is a memory full of happiness.
7) Many people feeling angry and alone in our days. Even before the spreading of Covid-19. How do you feel about this situation?
The situation has been devastating throughout the world and the problems everyone had now are bigger. I think there is too many confusing information and too many economical interests. I only wish everybody stay saved and strong so we can regain the activities we love the most and we all should have in mind that our Earth itself needed to rest from our acts.
8) What was the biggest compliment that made you feel really special about your musical career?
There are several moments that have made me feel happy with music. One of them was when the great Danny Vaughn (Tyketto) wanted to work with me being his background vocals in some dates in Spain. Or even when the AEV contest chose my single “Shiva” as an option for Eurovision festival in 2017.
9) How did you get started about music? Any possible idols or just your family helped you about this?
Since I was a child I was always playing , singing and performing in my room in my parent’s house hahaha but when I was a teenager I discovered the rock world and my queen Doro Pesch. So I knew that what I loved the most was music and I was a musician who needed to grow and learn. So I started writing lyrics and composing melodies for my first rock band in my neighborhood and step by step I began to study vocal technique, piano, music theory, harmony, History and Music Science, and Music and Singing Teacher at the university.
10) Do you believe that is essential to keep a steady line-up about your band? How are your relations with your band mates?
Absolutely if you want to get something you have to fight and be constant, but not only in music, it´s a general life lesson. Barbara Black is a family, we love and help each other and finding that balance has not been easy, but we are lucky and feel comfortable being together, that’s the key for getting good results in every project.
11) Are you happy about your label Rock Estatal? Do you agree about many bands that decide to self-release their albums?
Nowadays I think that the easiest thing for a band is to self-produce and self-launching, since the situation is so complicated for everyone. We are lucky and we have a label that give us support as advice and business coordination, but it is important to clear that our album is self produced thanks to a crowdfunding that our fans have supported and we really appreciate that.
12) Congrats about your work and your voice. Best of luck with your upcoming live and studio activities!
Thank you so much for this great interview and for this opportunity, rock and metal fans will be able to know us better. Keep on rockin´!!
